ALFRED "AL" LAWSON, President
Al Lawson is a political icon in the Sunshine State. Serving 28 years in the Florida Senate and House, Al earned the unofficial title of “Dean of the Legislature” during his final term, recognized for his long tenure in state government. First elected in 1982, Al served in both the majority and minority parties where he held numerous leadership roles and positions of power, including a term as the Minority Leader of the Florida Senate and another as Majority Whip in the Florida House.
While in the Florida Senate, Al chaired the Governmental Oversight & Accountability Committee as well as the Environmental Preservation & Conservation Committee. He also served as Vice Chair of the Senate General Governmental Appropriations Committee. In the House, Al served as Chairman for the Natural Resources Committee, Governmental Operations Committee, Health & Life Insurance and General Insurance Regulation Committee, and the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee.
Al Lawson has been recognized as a master of the state appropriations process, consistently bringing tax dollars home to his North Florida districts over the efforts of members from more populous areas. Al’s expertise in the legislative process is still highly regarded as he continues to informally advise leaders in the Senate, House and Executive Branch. Al’s relationships in Florida government are based not only on friendship but mutual respect.
Al has been recognized by various organizations across the political spectrum for his principled leadership in the Legislature. Al was awarded the Associated Industries of Florida Distinguished Senate Legislator of the Year Award, the Florida Sheriffs’ Association Legislative Leadership Award, the Florida Student Association’s Legislator of the Year Award, the Nature Conservancy Legislator of the Year Award, and many more distinctions and accolades.
Al was born in Gadsden County, just outside of the Capital City of Tallahassee, and has maintained deep roots in North Florida. A basketball star during his early years, Al was an athletic standout at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) and enjoyed a brief career as a professional basketball player before returning home to Tallahassee. In 1972, Al served as the Assistant Coach to the top-ranked Florida State University (FSU) basketball team which finished the season in second place, narrowly losing to legendary John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins in the national championship game.
Following his time as coach, Al opened his own insurance agency where he has been serving his community for over 30 years. Al has been recognized by Northwestern Mutual Financial Network as one of the company’s most valued agents. Al also founded his own marketing and communications firm in Tallahassee and hosts an annual basketball tournament for high school athletes.
Al Lawson received his Bachelor’s degree from FAMU and earned his Master’s degree from FSU. Al lobbies the Executive Office of the Governor, state departments and agencies, and members of the Florida Cabinet and their staff.
